USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#20 DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF GETTING PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS!

Repeat that over and over until it sinks in.

Your face represents your brand.

It’s your calling card.

If you want people to take you seriously, you must have a high-quality headshot.

A professional headshot is going to add value to your profile and help to get you hired.

Let me break it down for you.

Let’s look at Linkedin, for example. Linkedin is the world’s leading networking site for career advancement and employment opportunities. It’s an online business network and a portal for professionals. Your profile can be reached and viewed by an enormous network of potential customers or employers, all in the blink of an eye.

What’s their first port of call?

Where do they look when they open your profile?

Is it the ‘About‘ section?

The ‘Experience‘ or ‘Education’ sections?

NOPE.

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

Did I mention that IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE?!

That profile picture is the first impression, it’s your foot in the door. It can determine whether or not you are chosen by employers. You need to make it count.

Here’s a statistic that might shock you.

Linkedin profiles with professional headshots receive roughly 14 times more profile views and are 36 times more likely to receive a message on Linkedin.

That’s quite an advantage over the competition!

It’s important to look professional, confident and approachable.

Will you look professional with a phone selfie or holiday snap as your profile picture?

What message do you think such a picture conveys to a potential employer or business partner?

The brutal truth is that it looks like you don’t care about your career or your brand enough to invest in it.

If your profile picture is bad, you look bad. You want to be seen as a professional, not an amateur, so the way you present yourself in your photograph is everything.

That digital first impression lasts for just a split-second. Please take a moment to digest and remember this hard fact.

So what makes for a bad profile picture?

  • Selfies.

Your LinkedIn profile picture needs to match the professionalism of others on the site to give you a fighting chance. The high ‘selfie-angle’ is a poor photographic technique which causes foreshortening of the body and the loss of background. Standing in front of a mirror, whilst looking into your phone and pouting (I see this on Instagram every day) is also unacceptable. Selfies reek of amateur.

  • Filters.

If selfies make your profile picture look amateur, then using filters will help you win the race to the bottom. Skin-smoothing filters, bunny ears, anime eyes, crunchy clarity and bad black and whites, all look ridiculous. Photo-editing is not a one-click solution. Re-touching images is an art in itself and requires many years of hard work to achieve a high standard. DON’T USE FILTERS!

  • Don’t crop a group shot.

Cropping your wife or husband out of a wedding photo or a cropped photo of you from a night out will not present the best professional version of yourself. It shows a lack of commitment and looks like an afterthought.

  • Distracting Background.

Let’s keep it simple. Studio paper in grey, white or black are always a nice neat option that keeps the focus on you. Cinematic headshots also look amazing with a blurred background, achieved by shooting a long focal length and wide-open aperture.

Are you starting to see the value of professional photography now?

Do you know which pictures get the most likes on social media sites like Facebook?

Pictures of your dinner?

Pictures of yourself in a nightclub toilet?

NOPE.

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

People are excited and happy to see a picture of YOU!

It will also help if it’s a good picture of you!

How many newly launched small business websites do you see with care taken over the content and layout, but a badly taken profile picture in the ‘about me’ section?

Here’s where your professional photographer comes in.

Imagery can make or break your brand. High-quality photography adds value to your business.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF GETTING PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS!

Or the value of professional product photography, for that matter.

It might seem a little uncomfortable to thrust yourself into the spotlight as the face of your business, but the quicker you come to terms with this and make peace with it, the better. A professional headshot will improve the quality your profile photo and the way you feel about yourself as the founder of your business.
