Actor Headshots.

I absolutely love shooting headshots.

Working together with people who are willing to invest time and effort into upgrading their online image is extremely rewarding.

Your headshot or profile picture speaks volumes about how seriously you wish to be perceived by others, so if you want to get noticed I’m here to get you noticed, for all of the right reasons.

I was delighted to shoot some headshots for a young actor called Finley recently. His idol is Tom Holland of Spiderman fame and he wanted to bring a little of that super-cool steely attitude to his pictures.

It was Finley’s first headshot session.

Smashed it didn’t he.

Let’s have a closer look at that……………

Fierce!

Delighted with the intensity in these portraits.

Rockin’ the leather jacket for extra variety.

A really enjoyable easy-going session, with great results.

Fin was an absolute pleasure to work with and I wish him every success in his acting career.

That’s a wrap!

Break a leg……..

Well, break a knee in my case.
Sorry to report that I slipped and broke my knee in December. After reconstructive surgery on my kneecap to wire it all back together, I’ve been pretty much home-bound, recovering ever since.

Happy New Year!

Understandably I’m feeling a little down, but it hasn’t stopped me from concentrating on my goals for the future. Every day brings a little win and one small step closer to a full recovery.

I’m planning on getting back to work with the camera VERY soon.

In the meantime, stay tuned for some great new content. I have plenty of time on my hands!

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#20 DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF GETTING PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS!

Repeat that over and over until it sinks in.

Your face represents your brand.

It’s your calling card.

If you want people to take you seriously, you must have a high-quality headshot.

A professional headshot is going to add value to your profile and help to get you hired.

Let me break it down for you.

Let’s look at Linkedin, for example. Linkedin is the world’s leading networking site for career advancement and employment opportunities. It’s an online business network and a portal for professionals. Your profile can be reached and viewed by an enormous network of potential customers or employers, all in the blink of an eye.

What’s their first port of call?

Where do they look when they open your profile?

Is it the ‘About‘ section?

The ‘Experience‘ or ‘Education’ sections?

NOPE.

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

Did I mention that IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE?!

That profile picture is the first impression, it’s your foot in the door. It can determine whether or not you are chosen by employers. You need to make it count.

Here’s a statistic that might shock you.

Linkedin profiles with professional headshots receive roughly 14 times more profile views and are 36 times more likely to receive a message on Linkedin.

That’s quite an advantage over the competition!

It’s important to look professional, confident and approachable.

Will you look professional with a phone selfie or holiday snap as your profile picture?

What message do you think such a picture conveys to a potential employer or business partner?

The brutal truth is that it looks like you don’t care about your career or your brand enough to invest in it.

If your profile picture is bad, you look bad. You want to be seen as a professional, not an amateur, so the way you present yourself in your photograph is everything.

That digital first impression lasts for just a split-second. Please take a moment to digest and remember this hard fact.

So what makes for a bad profile picture?

  • Selfies.

Your LinkedIn profile picture needs to match the professionalism of others on the site to give you a fighting chance. The high ‘selfie-angle’ is a poor photographic technique which causes foreshortening of the body and the loss of background. Standing in front of a mirror, whilst looking into your phone and pouting (I see this on Instagram every day) is also unacceptable. Selfies reek of amateur.

  • Filters.

If selfies make your profile picture look amateur, then using filters will help you win the race to the bottom. Skin-smoothing filters, bunny ears, anime eyes, crunchy clarity and bad black and whites, all look ridiculous. Photo-editing is not a one-click solution. Re-touching images is an art in itself and requires many years of hard work to achieve a high standard. DON’T USE FILTERS!

  • Don’t crop a group shot.

Cropping your wife or husband out of a wedding photo or a cropped photo of you from a night out will not present the best professional version of yourself. It shows a lack of commitment and looks like an afterthought.

  • Distracting Background.

Let’s keep it simple. Studio paper in grey, white or black are always a nice neat option that keeps the focus on you. Cinematic headshots also look amazing with a blurred background, achieved by shooting a long focal length and wide-open aperture.

Are you starting to see the value of professional photography now?

Do you know which pictures get the most likes on social media sites like Facebook?

Pictures of your dinner?

Pictures of yourself in a nightclub toilet?

NOPE.

IT’S YOUR PROFILE PICTURE!

People are excited and happy to see a picture of YOU!

It will also help if it’s a good picture of you!

How many newly launched small business websites do you see with care taken over the content and layout, but a badly taken profile picture in the ‘about me’ section?

Here’s where your professional photographer comes in.

Imagery can make or break your brand. High-quality photography adds value to your business.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF GETTING PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS!

Or the value of professional product photography, for that matter.

It might seem a little uncomfortable to thrust yourself into the spotlight as the face of your business, but the quicker you come to terms with this and make peace with it, the better. A professional headshot will improve the quality your profile photo and the way you feel about yourself as the founder of your business.

Let’s work together to elevate your profile and strengthen your brand.

I’ve created an in-depth series of articles that should answer the majority of your questions about headshot sessions and the value of professional photography.

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#19 WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY HEADSHOT SESSION?

The simple answer.

WEAR WHAT YOU LOVE!

We want you to feel confident and relaxed.

Dress to represent your brand.

More on this here.

Consider the following things.

  • Solid, bold colours are best. Choose a bold colour that suits you and matches your skin tone. Consider a colour that complements your eyes.
  • Patterns, logos, loud colours and shiny materials are distracting. The focus of the headshot session is you, your face and your brand. Not that zig-zag pattern on your favourite sweater!
  • Avoid white, it will compete with your face to be the brightest part of the image. It’s also very reflective, so leave the whites at home.
  • Choose well-fitting clothing and avoid anything chunky or baggy. It may be comfortable, but it will add bulk and make you look heavier.
  • Avoid anything that fits too tight. There’s comfortable, then there’s bursting out of a tight shirt!
  • Choose something you’ve worn before, something that works for you. It will give you peace of mind.
  • Select a neckline that ends at or above the collar bone. Your headshot will be tightly cropped, so we would try to avoid having a deep plunging neckline exiting the bottom of the frame. High polo necks should also be avoided.
  • Layer your clothing. It’s a great way to mix things up and create multiple looks. Not too many layers though, as it will add bulk. We’re looking to strike a nice balance here.
  • Avoid fashionable trends and think classic style, it ages better. Fashion changes with every new season. If you stick to classic designs, then you won’t need to update your headshots as often.
  • Bring a few different looks with you. We will get a better variety of images with more options. A good rule of thumb would be three to four different outfits.

MORE ABOUT COLOURS.

Nailing the colours is an often underestimated tool in portrait photography. Choosing colours that complement your eye colour and skin tone will elevate the pictures to a higher level and make them stand out.

Here are a few useful tips.

  • Choose colours to match your skin tone. Earthy shades, such as olive, green, brown and cream work well with warmer skin tones. For neutral skin tones, opt for sky blue, jade green and greys. Cooler skin tones work best with bolder, brighter colours, such as rich blues, emerald or burgundy.
  • Avoid metallic colours. We want you to shine, not your shirt! Shimmery, metallic or neon colours will be extremely distracting in a headshot.
  • Texture can add dimension. Take a look at the image at the top of the page. See how nice the subject’s textured sweater looks? A solid-coloured shirt or top with a simple texture can help you stand out. The key is to select a simple texture and not overdo it.
  • Steer clear of elaborate textures and patterns such as tweed, plaid, herringbone or tartan. These fabrics will be too distracting for your headshots.
  • If you are wearing a suit, be aware that lighter suit colours work better for people with warmer skin tones and vice versa. Darker suits work well with light and medium skin tones.
  • Match the colour of your neck-tie to your shirt and jacket and resist the urge to wear strong patterns or that Homer Simpson comedy piece!

Here’s a useful article about complementary colours and how to use a colour wheel.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER ON THE DAY.

A few closing thoughts on making sure that your styling and presentation is impeccable on ‘D-Day!’

  • Make sure that your selected clothing is clean. Egg or curry stains aren’t going to look great in your headshot.
  • Iron everything beforehand. Creases and curry stains (for that matter) can be removed in Photoshop, but let’s not go down that road!
  • Bring a clothes brush or a lint roller with you. It’s a good idea to give everything a once-over before we shoot.
  • Hangars are your friend! It’s preferable to hang your clothes neatly, as opposed to stuffing them in a sports bag!

These tips should help you to prepare for your headshot session.

Please do drop me a message beforehand if there is anything you are uncertain about.

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#16 DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR YOUR BRAND OR ROLE.

It’s important.

Consider how you want to present yourself in your headshots or business portraits. These photographs will represent you and your brand on platforms like Linkedin, Facebook or a company website. They need to be an accurate representation of you.

Think about the clothing you plan to bring to your headshot session and by all means discuss it with your photographer beforehand.

What would ‘inappropriate’ clothing look like?

Let’s say you work in construction, for example, then a pinstriped suit might not be ‘role-appropriate.’ It would however, be perfect attire for a banker or lawyer.

See where I’m going with this?

Are you a dog groomer, a nail-technician or anyone that works in a branded uniform with a logo? Bring it along to the session. We can shoot some images with you wearing your brand colours and logo as well as some slightly more formally attired shots.

I would always suggest you bring a few different outfits along to your headshot session. This allows us to mix it up and get a nice variety of looks.

If in doubt, please drop me a message before the session and I’ll be happy to help.

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS

#8 DITCH THE FAKE TAN!

The brutal truth is that fake tan just does not photograph well.

You want to look your best for your headshot session, we’ve discussed this in previous posts.

You want your headshot to get you noticed FOR THE RIGHT REASONS, not the wrong ones!

So why shouldn’t you use fake tan before your headshot session?

  • Ninety-nine per cent of the time, fake tan does exactly what it says on the tin………it looks fake! It does not add the healthy glow to your skin that you think it does, so it’s kind of self-defeating.
  • Your skin will look blotchy and patchy in areas where it has been applied unevenly. Trust me, this is the last thing you want in your headshots.
  • Some retouching can be done to tone it all down a little, but let me tell you, that’s THE last thing your photographer wants! I love editing images, but spending hours retouching uneven skin tones is not my idea of fun.
  • There’s a very good chance that you’re going to look orange. Let that sink in. You don’t want to look orange in your headshots unless you have a casting for a part in a Tango commercial!

All of this might sound a little harsh and I apologise if you love a spray tan, but your face is your brand and your photographer has a duty of care to ensure that you get the best from your headshot session.

Providing you with professional headshots is my raison d’être, so if you do have to have a fake tan beforehand then…………..

  • Book your spray tan with an experienced professional.
  • Go for the LIGHT and NATURAL option.
  • Get your tan a few days before the headshot session to give it a chance to settle down.
  • Get your tan a few days before the headshot session in case it goes wrong and we need to reschedule.

A quick word on real tan whilst we’re on the subject………..

Ditch the real tan too!

It might not be a massive problem here in the UK, but I’d personally advise abstaining from sunbathing in the days leading up to your headshot session.

Anything that does damage to your skin is going to be detrimental to the way you appear in your photos. Sunburn, redness and uneven skin tones are not desirable.

I guess the rule of thumb here, is, unless you live in a warm country and have year-round evenly tanned bronze skin then the best option is to avoid the sun for a few days before your headshot session. I know that pub beer garden might be tempting, but you are also supposed to be staying off the booze for a few days remember?

I sound like a dictator!

I’ve got your back though, trust me.

Stay tuned for more useful headshot tips.

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS

#7 WORK WITH YOUR BEST SIDE

Do you have a preferred side?

Maybe you always part your hair to one side?

In my headshot sessions, I will always work with you to determine which is your best side. It’s important to establish this at the beginning of the shoot as it will allow me to adjust my lighting to better emphasise your stronger side.

It may seem an unusual fact, but the majority of human faces lack complete symmetry. Did you know that sixty percent of people are stronger on the left side of their face?

A study by Dr James Schirillo at Wake Forest University determined that the left side of the face is more attractive than the right! The results suggested that the left side had a tendency to exhibit greater emotion than the right.

Most people have one eye that is smaller than the other or a stronger jaw-line on one side.

Most of you will look better on your left side, some of you on your right side and occasionally straight on will be your best angle.

So whichever it is, let’s work on finding your best side.

I will figure out which side of your face is the strongest, but if you already know which is your best side, then you by all means let your headshot photographer know at the beginning of your session.

I’m guessing that you’re heading to the mirror now to scrutinise your face, sorry about that!

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#5 WEAR YOUR FAVOURITE FRAGRANCE!

This is slightly unconventional, but this tip is intended to put you in……the zone!

Really?

Fragrance?

Let’s break it down.

**IT’S MY MISSION AS A HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHER TO MAKE YOU LOOK CONFIDENT AND APPROACHABLE**

These are the keys to a successful headshot.

Great lighting too of course, but the main goal is to make you look your best, to get you hired, get you likes, to get you noticed.

So, why fragrance?

I’m a complete ‘frag-head’ (fragrance collector).

Fragrance can help you to project confidence. It will transport you via your sense of smell to different times and places. Scent can trigger fond memories of achievements and personal conquests. Don’t underestimate the power of a great fragrance. Do you have a ‘go-to’ fragrance you wear to the office, to interviews, to board meetings? Wearing it will boost your confidence, so rock that fragrance at your headshot session and smash it out of the park.

Confidence and approachability

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#4 DRINK A GALLON OF WATER EVERY DAY!

Drinking lots of water might seem an unusual addition to a photographer’s guide to getting better headshots, but indulge me.

Many of us are guilty of not drinking enough water, but if you can train yourself to down 4-6 pints of the old ‘council pop’ every day, then you’re going to reap these fantastic benefits………….

  • Your skin is going to look GREAT! It’s a no-brainer. If your skin looks amazing, then you’re setting yourself up to look your best in your headshots.
  • Drinking plenty of water will give your skin a warm and healthy glow.
  • It can even soften the edges of smile lines.
  • Keeping yourself hydrated will naturally stifle your appetite and help with weight management.
  • It will also give you energy, improve your general mood and help you to manage anxiety.

So make like Bobby Boucher (The Waterboy) and pour yourself a glass of high-quality H2O!

‘You can do it!’
