USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#15 WEAR CLOTHING THAT FITS YOU!

It’s headshot time, not ‘hammer time!’

“Break it down!”

Baggy clothes might be comfortable and we’ve all been enjoying wearing our ‘comfies’ during the Coronavirus Pandemic, but they don’t photograph well. So don’t turn up to your headshot session wearing your favourite chunky jumper, over-sized t-shirt or ‘MC Hammer pants!’ Resist the urge to wear your favourite shirt if the collar is a bit loose, it won’t look good in the photos. Clothing that is too big tends to add bulk and might make you appear heavier than you are. We don’t want that.

What we do want, is for you to choose form-fitting clothing. An outfit that accentuates and flatters your body will yield the best results.

But.

When I say form-fitting, please don’t take that to mean ‘skin-tight!’

Lumps and bumps can be easily ‘liquified‘ in Photoshop (flattened out), but having you bursting out of a muscle-fit top is not the look we want to project in our professional headshots. If we’re doing a fitness, physique or muscle shoot it’s a different conversation altogether.

So, let’s find that happy medium.

What are the golden rules?

  • Wear form-fitting clothing that fits well.
  • Wear form-fitting clothing that fits well, BUT, is also comfortable.
  • Wear form-fitting clothing that represents your brand.
  • Wear form-fitting clothing in complementary colours but avoid white.

Just a quick word on white.

White will always be battling with your face for attention in a photograph. Our eyes are drawn to the brightest part of an image. I want the brightest part of the image to be your face, not your shirt. It’s your time to shine. Let your shirt shine in the club on Saturday night!

So, ditch the white.

More on colours and clothing coming soon.

#14 FORGET ABOUT THE CAMERA!

That’s right!

I’ll let you into a little secret.

It’s not much of a secret actually.

It’s kinda obvious.

THE MOMENT YOU RELAX IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, IS WHEN THE MAGIC HAPPENS!

It’s that simple.

When you can forget about the camera and start to be yourself, is when we’re going to start capturing you at your best.

‘But I hate having my picture taken’

‘The camera makes me nervous’

Don’t worry.

I got you.

We’re going to chat, have a few laughs, have a drink, do a handstand! Whatever it takes to get you to feel comfortable at your headshot session. I’m liberal with my time and I’m not going to pressure you by placing a constraint on it. So, let’s relax, get in the zone and create some killer headshots.

#10 CONFIDENCE COMES FROM THE EYES.

Let’s take a moment to digest this game-changing fact.

Tyra Banks coined the neologism ‘smize’ on America’s Top Model in 2009, meaning ‘to smile with your eyes’.

Peter Hurley the New York City headshot master invented ‘the squinch’ technique to illustrate the importance of this to a successful headshot session.

Appearing confident and approachable are the two essential elements of a successful headshot.

So, how do you squinch?

It’s easy.

You work your bottom eyelid by lifting and tightening it a little.

That’s it!

You’re not squinting though. Squinting is working both top and bottom eyelids. We can bring the top eyelid down a tiny little bit, but we don’t want you to squint, that’s going to make you look confused or short-sighted, but bringing that bottom eyelid up just a little is going to make you appear confident. It’s one small action that yields BIG dividends.

You will have to practise this, just a little, but you’ll pick it up in no time at all.

Try it in the mirror before your headshot session.

Here’s a fantastic video of Peter Hurley demonstrating his trademark squinch.

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS FOR WOMEN.

#9 SAY NO TO THE NECKLACE!

Let’s ease off with the jewellery altogether.

Why?

Well, because your headshot session is about YOU, not your prized possessions. We’re focusing on capturing your personality. It’s your time to shine. We don’t want to dazzle or distract the viewer with bling baby!

See how the necklace in the image takes the viewer’s focus away from the subject’s collar bone? How the ear-ring takes the viewer’s focus away from her jaw-line?

I rest my case, your honour!

So leave the bling at home.

If you decide to wear ear-rings to your headshot session, then the safest bet is to opt for small, neat studs.

Now repeat after me……….

YOU are going to be the star of your headshot session, not your accessories!

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS

#7 WORK WITH YOUR BEST SIDE

Do you have a preferred side?

Maybe you always part your hair to one side?

In my headshot sessions, I will always work with you to determine which is your best side. It’s important to establish this at the beginning of the shoot as it will allow me to adjust my lighting to better emphasise your stronger side.

It may seem an unusual fact, but the majority of human faces lack complete symmetry. Did you know that sixty percent of people are stronger on the left side of their face?

A study by Dr James Schirillo at Wake Forest University determined that the left side of the face is more attractive than the right! The results suggested that the left side had a tendency to exhibit greater emotion than the right.

Most people have one eye that is smaller than the other or a stronger jaw-line on one side.

Most of you will look better on your left side, some of you on your right side and occasionally straight on will be your best angle.

So whichever it is, let’s work on finding your best side.

I will figure out which side of your face is the strongest, but if you already know which is your best side, then you by all means let your headshot photographer know at the beginning of your session.

I’m guessing that you’re heading to the mirror now to scrutinise your face, sorry about that!

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS.

#5 WEAR YOUR FAVOURITE FRAGRANCE!

This is slightly unconventional, but this tip is intended to put you in……the zone!

Really?

Fragrance?

Let’s break it down.

**IT’S MY MISSION AS A HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHER TO MAKE YOU LOOK CONFIDENT AND APPROACHABLE**

These are the keys to a successful headshot.

Great lighting too of course, but the main goal is to make you look your best, to get you hired, get you likes, to get you noticed.

So, why fragrance?

I’m a complete ‘frag-head’ (fragrance collector).

Fragrance can help you to project confidence. It will transport you via your sense of smell to different times and places. Scent can trigger fond memories of achievements and personal conquests. Don’t underestimate the power of a great fragrance. Do you have a ‘go-to’ fragrance you wear to the office, to interviews, to board meetings? Wearing it will boost your confidence, so rock that fragrance at your headshot session and smash it out of the park.

Confidence and approachability

USEFUL HEADSHOT TIPS FOR MEN.

#3 MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN!

Don’t turn up to your headshot session with a ‘walnut face!’

Whether it’s for Linkedin, Facebook or a company website, your profile picture is your brand, and it defines you to your viewers. Think of it as a virtual handshake. A first impression. See how important it is now that we portray you at your very best?

Incorporating moisturiser into your daily grooming routine is going to keep the skin on your face from drying out and help you to stay looking fresher and younger.

Now we do want to look our best for our headshots don’t we fellas?

Time to start slapping on that face cream!

Moisturise 2-3 times a day for a week before the shoot for great results.

Try not to use moisturisers with an SPF factor as they tend to give the face an unnatural shine.

Here’s an in-depth article on skincare for men.

Getting creative with the lighting.

“Slice” featuring Rue Moriah

Creative Fashion Beauty Headshot

I love to experiment with lighting during my model shoots and I’d wanted to try this technique out that I’d seen used by the master Joel Grimes for a while.

It’s a relatively simple lighting setup but hopefully you’ll agree that the results are quite striking.

The first step is to get the backlight right. In this case the background is a large octabox placed directly behind the subject’s head. You have to bring the power up just enough but not too much as to blow out the highlights. A good way to check this is to enable the highlight alert on your camera (the blinkies) or if shooting tethered it’s easy to check the highlight clipping on the histogram in Lightroom. Simple trial and error will get you to the right place in just a couple of shots. I particularly like the way light wraps around the subject’s face as a result of this.

Nest step is to establish the main light. For this I’ve used a Godox speedlight inside a Rogue grid to create a tight beam of light. To make it even tighter I fashioned a slit over the front of the grid using two pieces of cardboard and some tape (I wanted that beam of light to be really tight)! I boomed this light directly in front and aimed down at Rue’s face and adjusted it until we got it right.

The black and white edit was intentional to really emphasise the contrast.
I hope you like the image.

Joel’s video on the subject is most definitely worth a watch and can be viewed here

Stay safe.
